no iPhone until you build your own computer
I’m writing this on my iPad with no keyboard, so I ask that you forgive any mistakes in advance ❤️
My wife is due to have our first kid in a week or so. We know enough to know that you can’t predict how you’ll react to a child’s wants and desires. But let’s speculate anyways.
There is a general consensus (but, of course, limited proof) that Gen Z kind of sucks at computers. KingMachievelli—I lost the link because I’m typing this on my iPad—on Hacker News put it well:
Gen Z is to computers/internet the way millennials are to cars; while cars/computers are fundamental to their way of living they actually know less about them than the previous generation.
So my master plan is to have our future child build a computer, assuming you’ll still be able to do that, before they are allowed to get their first phone. Hopefully, that will give him a kickstart into exploring technology of all sorts a little more deliberately, permeating into smarter decision making when using technology overall.
What’s more likely though is my wife and I will end up building the computer while our kid passively watches (you’re holding the flashlight wrong!), and they’ll get the phone anyways 🙃

Cautious Optimism. Alex Wilhelm, one of my closest friends, has started a newsletter. It will “sit between trenchant big tech and affirmative early-stage tech coverage. Benefit of the doubt for smaller companies, expectations of excellence from larger firms, and a bullish vibe on new technology.” Subscribe here.
Inbox Ten. Meta’s CTO details his how he manages the inbound messages he receives across multiple platforms. A huge part of my job is collating information and proactively communicating it in Slack, email, iMessages, Twitter and whatever else. I bet some of you have that as a big part of your job as well. It’s worth a skim.
Sidenote. Kind of a cool app that basically lets you take notes and create todo lists in the widget area of your Mac. It’s also not a subscription, thank god.
Stay awesome folks 🫡
